What is NSF Certified for Sport? Tested Supplements for Athletes

When it comes to dietary supplements, ensuring you are choosing high-quality ones should be a top priority. Research examining dietary supplements has found some to be contaminated with banned substances including steroids and illegal stimulants. [1,2,3,4] In some cases products have been found to contain synthetic stimulants that have never even been tested for safety in humans.[5] On top of these issues, some supplements have been found to have microbial contamination, heavy metal contamination, and contain substituted herbs replacing the ingredients listed on the label.[6]

As a consumer looking to take a supplement to improve their health and performance, the last thing they would want to do is unknowingly contain harmful ingredients. Fortunately, one way you can make safer choices as a consumer when shopping for sports nutrition supplements is looking for those that come with the NSF® Certified for Sport® certification.

What is NSF®?

NSF® stands for National Sanitation Foundation; it was founded in 1944 to help standardize sanitation and food safety requirements. NSF is an independent accredited organization that continues testing, inspecting, and certifying products. Its mission is to protect and improve global human health. NSF is widely recognized as the “gold standard” organization when it comes to inspecting dietary supplements. Justin Fields, Professional Football Player and C4 Athlete

What is NSF® Certified for Sport®?

Certified for Sport® is a program created by NSF® to certify that what is on the label is in the bottle, and that product does not contain unsafe levels of contaminants, banned substances, or masking agents – this is especially important for professional athletes. The Certified for Sport® program verifies that products do not contain any of the 280 substances banned by the major athletic organizations.

The Certified for Sport® certification is recognized by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), Major League Baseball, and the National Hockey League.

NSF® Certified for Sport® Requirements

To get the Certified for Sport® certification, there are key steps that must be taken, these include:

1) Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Registration: GMP registration validates that a product is made, packaged, and stored in a facility that is audited twice a year for quality and safety that follows federal regulation GMPs for dietary supplements

2) Product Contents Tested and Certified: NSF experts evaluate product contents. This step involves testing the finished product to ensure what is in the product matches what is on the label, the product is free of contaminants (think microbiological, heavy metals, pesticides, and herbicides). This step also involves ongoing testing and evaluation of a product to ensure it stays compliant.

3) Certified for Sport® Certification: In this step, product lots are tested to ensure they are free from 280 banned substances. The NSF® team continuously monitors newly banned substances to stay on the forefront of banned substance testing.
