Weight loss is the goal, but you're probably thinking where the heck do I start? The first thing I want you to do is to take a deep breath because I am going to share with you some basic ideas that are easy to implement and will ultimately help you along your journey towards shedding lbs.
Let’s talk about your morning routine
Your eyes open and the day has just begun. I want you to do three things:
- Hydrate: Overlooked by many but it's important. Drink at least 8 oz of water IMMEDIATELY after waking up. You need to feel energized to tackle the day ahead, and you can't if you're lagging from being dehydrated.
- Set an intention for your day: I want you to get up a few minutes earlier than normal to mentally prep for the day ahead. What's on your to-do list? How does your schedule look? When will you work out? Do you have healthy meals and snacks prepped? What obstacles are you up against? Half the battle of staying on track with your weight loss is having goals and anticipating roadblocks, then working around them.
- Have a 'clean' breakfast: I don't have to tell you to avoid pastries and bagels. But it's worth reinforcing that your first meal is important and it should be as clean as possible, with a balance of carbohydrates, healthy fat and protein. For me, the trifecta is several eggs, egg whites and a cup of oatmeal. Together these foods give me the right amount of energy and fuel to get to business!
Let’s talk about staying focused in the afternoon
When the afternoon rolls around you’ve probably had a meal or two and maybe a snack in between. Maybe you’re feeling a little tired and are struggling to stay focused. Maybe you’re thinking of skipping your gym session after work. The mid-point in your day is a window for supplementation. When you cut calories, which is an inevitable part of the weight loss process, it's common to feel depleted, tired and in need of energy. In those moments, supplements can help you push through and stay on track with your goals. Whether it's a weight loss support supplement that helps energize you or a whey protein that helps keep your appetite in check between meals, supplements can enhance the effort you are already put into your nutrition and workout plan.
Let’s talk about cravings
Whether it’s mid-morning, afternoon or late night, cravings can hit like a ton of bricks. If you're anything like me, you’ll want to demolish something absolutely terrible for you. The secret for stopping cravings is simple: get rid of all the crappy food in your path. If you can touch it, smell it, or even see it hiding in your pantry, it's way too close. I understand you can’t control every situation (office doughnuts anyone?), which is why it's critical to plan ahead. Whether you’re sitting at home on the couch or are at your desk at work, you want access to healthy snacks for when the cravings hit. A few of my staples are jerky, Greek yogurt, veggies, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter, celery sticks, almonds, apples, avocado, and popcorn.
Let’s talk about workouts
Aside from failing to plan out meals and snacks, finding an appropriate training plan is the second area where people fail in their weight loss efforts. I don't want that to happen to you, so listen up. Do not under any circumstance confuse "workouts" for "plans." A workout is just one piece of a bigger plan. You need to have a structured, progressive plan that you can follow day by day and week by week until you've reached your goal. Approaching weight loss without a clear cut plan is a recipe for disaster.
Losing weight isn't easy but it doesn't have to be complicated: plan ahead, put in work and repeat.
